Attracting a lunch crowd for a restaurant is different than attracting the happy hour or dinner crowd. Typically, lunch patrons are short on time, so they need speedy service; they don't necessarily want a heavy meal, so they don't fall asleep at work in the afternoon; and they want an "all in" offer. One of my favorite places for lunch years ago, was a place that had an offer, any sandwich, anyway, with chips and a drink for $10. There was no nickel and dine for different cheeses or separate prices for water versus iced tea versus soda. Everyone knew what they were going to pay when they walked in. It was fast, it was good food and they were friendly.
There are several strategies a restaurant can employ to attract more lunch crowds during the week:
- Offer Lunch Specials: Create enticing lunch specials that are affordable and appealing to working professionals. This could include discounted combo meals, prix fixe menus, or special dishes only available during lunch hours. If there are construction sites locally, you can also offer specials to these workers, if they are not served by a food truck.
- Speedy Service: Many lunchtime diners are on a tight schedule, so ensuring quick and efficient service is crucial. Streamline your ordering and delivery processes to minimize wait times.
- Promote Takeout and Delivery: Cater to the busy lunch crowd by offering convenient takeout and delivery options. Utilize food delivery apps or your own online ordering system to reach customers who can't dine in. Consider getting copies of your menus into the companies so they have access to it for group ordering.
- Create a Relaxing Atmosphere: While speed is important, don't overlook the importance of creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for diners to enjoy their meal. Consider factors like lighting, music, and seating arrangements to enhance the dining experience.
- Loyalty Programs: Implement a loyalty program to incentivize repeat business. Offer discounts, freebies, or special perks for customers who dine with you regularly. Provide the list of specials ahead of time (not the same day) so they can plan to eat out on the days that appeal to them, so they can leave their boxed lunch at home on those days.
- Partner with Local Businesses: Collaborate with nearby businesses to offer joint promotions or discounts to their employees. This could involve offering a special lunch deal exclusively for employees of certain companies.
- Social Media Marketing: Use social media platforms to promote your lunch offerings and engage with potential customers. Share enticing photos of your dishes, run contests or giveaways, and respond promptly to customer inquiries and reviews.
- Host Events or Theme Days: Organize special events or theme days during lunch hours to attract customers. This could include live music performances, tasting events, or themed menu days.
- Offer Healthy Options: With more people prioritizing health and wellness, offering nutritious and balanced lunch options can be a major draw. Highlight your healthier menu items and accommodate dietary restrictions or preferences.
- Local Advertising: Utilize local advertising channels such as community newspapers, radio stations, or online platforms to promote your lunch specials and attract nearby residents and workers.
By implementing a combination of these strategies, a restaurant can effectively increase its lunchtime traffic and attract more customers during the week.
